In an unprecedented and unique performance, Egyptian-Canadian guitarist and oud player Ali Omar El-Farouk brings his newly-formed Levant-Andalucía Trio to The Siam Society. Accompanied by Łukasz Kurzydło on percussion and Bartosz Dworak on violin, this trio presents not one but two performances back-to-back, each containing its own repertoire and a variety of different instruments.

The first performance takes the audience deep into the heart of Andalucía in the south of Spain, the birthplace of flamenco music. This deep and historical art form has evolved into many sub-genres over the years, and the Levant-Andalucía Trio explores the instrumental side of flamenco. Where the flamenco guitar had traditionally been used to accompany the dance and singing, it has later on evolved into its own genre of flamenco guitar music, breaking the boundaries of tradition and fusing the flamenco guitar with many other instruments.

The second performance takes the audience even further back in time, to the music of the levant region of the middle-east, where the oud reigns supreme. With such an ancient historical significance, the oud is one of the most recognizable and popular musical instruments in the middle-east. With such a hypnotizing beautiful sound, it has always been the instrument of choice for the greatest composers from this region, and it carries forward so much music of many eras from many countries. This performance introduces the audience to some of the most popular compositions that really allow the oud to shine, especially in a dialogue with the violin where these two instruments have proven to blend beautifully together.

The oud, whose own ancestor dates back some 3500 years to ancient Persia, first arrived with the Moors during their 711 AD invasion of Spain. More importantly, the oud is a direct, if distant, ancestor of the modern guitar. Even though each instrument has evolved into its own musical world, the strong connection between the two instruments is always there.

Even though these three artists are collaborating for the first time as a trio, they already have much in common: from their shared passions for improvisation and playing string instruments, to their love of jazz music and Arabic Maqam modal music.

In this unprecedented performance, this trio presents a repertoire consisting of their own original compositions as well as some of their favourite and well-known jazz standards.

The unique thing about this concert is that this is the first time Ali Omar El-Farouk and Ahmad Hani perform together since 2008! Even though the two had collaborated together many times in the past, they had both moved out of Egypt a long time ago. With both of them being currently in Cairo, a long overdue reunion was in order, and they couldn’t be happier to share the stage with none other than the multi-talented Rana Haggag. A one-of-a-kind performance not to be missed!

After his successful solo oud performance of last year, Egyptian/Canadian oud player Ali Omar El-Farouk returns to Brooklyn Maqam for the second year in a row, this time with his Maqamat Trio!

Following his return from Montreal to Cairo in 2019, Ali Omar El-Farouk had sought to create a context and collaboration in which he can continue playing Arabic Maqam Music repertoire in Cairo. With a preference for the trio formation which he had formed many different versions of throughout his career, he formed Maqamat Trio in 2021 with Ayman Asfour on violin and Hany Bedair on riq. The trio performed in Cairo continuously since its inception, with its latest performances taking place earlier this year.

As fate would have it, both Ali and Ayman would be in Brooklyn at the same time on August 14th, the date of the concert. So it only made sense for Ali to bring his Cairo-based Maqamat Trio to Brooklyn. This time, the two artists would be accompanied by none other than Brooklyn’s very own Johnny Farraj on riq.

It is worth noting that these three artists have either known each other or known about one another for years, having so much in common, and having still much more to share with one another. They are very excited to be performing together as a trio for the very first time, especially in front of Brooklyn Maqam’s very appreciative audience who know and love Tarab and Arabic Maqam music so much.
